final horror film review

After completing my third draft it was apparent that it needed re-adjusting in many different ways such as the
  •  layout of the review: to create an extra horror feel to it
  • language : focus on writing from a 3rd person perspective which allows it to fit in with typical film reviews and use language which fits in with horror e.g. ( Oozing, terrorized possessed)
  • used of colours :  use more darker colours to great a better atmosphere towards the double page spread
I changed the layout slightly by adding more pictures from the film and also increasing the size of them which allowed the audiences to see the pictures more clearly. This allowed the review to stand out a lot more.  I also changed the background by using dark grey crinkle paper effect as the background it helped give clued to the setting which was in a school. Also the use of black covering the rest of the page allow information to be withheld and also allure the audiences to read the review and find out what the movie is about and if it is worth watching

I also focused on writing from a third person perspective  which gave my work depth and a realistic feel. and also the lettering used is coloured white to stand out over the dark colours and also give out key information to the audience.

Throughout constructing this horror double page spread it allowed me to focus more on the technical written sides of the work rather than the horror effect this is because too  much horror effect may distract the audience form reading the text and finding out information regarding the film.
Overall  the improvement of this horror film has somewhat been a success as there have been dramatic changes which have highlighted different skills.

Final Horror poster

Here is a reconstruction of my final poster. After looking at my previous horror poster I believed that I could improve it further so I began by removing the main image and replace it with a single glaring eye. I believe this was effective because it was placed in an "eye line match" which gives the illusion that the eye is watching you which had connotations to the film of a mischievous girl watching over her victim and waiting for the moment to pounce. Also inside the pupil of the eye you can see a reflection which you can see as a window , this helps highlight that THE KILLINGS ARE TAKEN PLACE INSIDE AND GIVES AWAY THE SETTING  I believe this gave a greater feel to my work

I also change the layout of the text and also the fonts from a san-serif to a serif font which is normally used throughout horror film posters , this help give an ancient feel to my work and I believe I have executed this perfectly.

Also by using  a darker shade of red within my work as it helped recreate the colour of blood. within the main image of an eye the pupil is actually red which creates a devilish feel to the poster. The use of white helps highlight key information for the audience to see such as the directors, characters and editors. and black which is the main body of this poster which helps conceal knowledge of the film which helps create suspense for the audiences to determine what is going to appear with the film.

creating new film review double page spread

When creating my horror film double page spread I needed to consider different conventions such as the colour and images as well as the written information within my actual double page spread.

By also looking at previous attempts I was able to develop my knowledge and understanding of how a review needed to sound and  look.

  • I then began to use a Program called ‘In Design’ which allowed me to create a blank double page spread template to be the foundation of my actual review and also creating columns to help me easily insert images and text to create a structural double page spread

  • I then began finding backgrounds of crinkled paper which helped illustrate the setting which was in a school
  • Then I began to think of the type of images I was going to use within my double page spread I then thought by using my main image from my previous poster I was able to create a scarier effect due to the look and detail u did previously when constructing this image. I also used different images from scenes within my film, this aided my audiences to be encouraged to watch the film as the images look appealing.

  • I then inserted my logo ‘OMINOUS’ and changed the position to a verbal angle as it challenges the traditional mastheads used by actual film reviews.

  • Image result for word
I then created a blank word document and copied out my dialogue which I was going to use within my review.  I also wrote my dialogue in  3rd person as it helps conform to other film reviews which have been written by critics who voice their opinion regarding the positives and negatives of a  film. I wrote my review regarding the strengths of the film as well as a few negative as it helped my review become more realistic

The difference between old review and my new review

When producing my old review I struggled to understand what was needed and I also believed the main objective of the review was to look appealing, this is the reason why the quality of  my double page spread did have quite a lot of aspects of a horror film. However the content didn’t reflect the actual look of the double page spread which has effected the final products

Old Double Page Spread

The New Horror Double Page Spread

However, in my new horror double page spread I do believe that I had time to plan and write from a 3rd person perspective how good my actual film was and what could be improved or changed to make the film become more effective . I also use different effects such as the crinkled paper background which showed connotations to the setting of the film and also the use of darker colours and reds helped illustrate the genre of the film which was horror and as you can see there is a dramatic difference within my actual work which highlight the development of skills .

creating my new horror poster

Evidence of creating my Horror Poster

  • I firstly started with a blank international A4 paper in Photoshop and coloured the background black which was going to be the base of my poster.

  •  Then I inserted my eye image and began to use a brush took to blend the eye into the background this help create the effect that the eye was going to pop out of the screen which I found most effective.

  •  By changing the edge of the brush and changing the opacity and the flow I was able to alter different aspects of the eye as some sides needed more blending than others to get an equal amount of blending. Also by using the graphics tablet I was able to pinpoint exactly which areas needed blending which helped my accuracy.

  • I also the used the Ellipse tool to draw a circle over the eye in order to create the devilish red effect over it. I then used Filters to change the shade and opacity of the red which helped create a spooky effect

  • I then began to focus on the title "OMINOUS" which was another important section of my work.  I made it bigger and used a dark shade of red then my previous draft

  • I then focused on the fonts of the casting list at the bottom of the page, I began to use different fonts such as (Onyx) for the cast names and ( Tw cent MT condensed) for the smaller detailed texts  , this helped highlight key information and by using the colour white it would help distinguish the information from the eye and the master head

  • This was a tricky element within my poster to master, as I didn’t want to make the fonts too small and prevent view properly or too big to distract the attention away from the main image of an eye and the master head

  • By using film company sponsors it highlight to audiences that the film is going to be interested as the reputation of the companies are profound
Differences between my old and my new Horror posters

In my first horror film poster creation I did use a style model which was very similar to my final piece and it didn't aid me to show off the skills which I was capable of. I did use a good variety of skills and equipment such as the graphics tablet and also the paining tool which did help me increase my own skills and knowledge of creating a horror film.
However, in my new poster I did keep the concept of an eye which represents someone always watching over who however I changed the layout and also the made my main image and masthead bigger this was used to create suspense for the readers . I also used different tools such as the layer filter tool which helped change the effect of the red pupil within the eye image used.  this has strengthened my understanding of the subjects and the different programs

By looking at my previous draft I can see a huge transformation as it has helped displayed my skills I have gained throughout my time studying media studies at AS and A2
